The Beach of Lacona
With a length of 1,2 kilometres, Lacona is the longest beach on the Island of Elba after the one in Marina di Campo. This golden arch facing Montecristo is called after the gulf bearing the same name, and is sheltered by Capo Fonza and the long peninsula of Capo Stella with its many beaches scattered along the coast that can be reached only by sea.
Thanks to its golden sands, the water that is shallow till quite far out, the numerous bathing establishments and facilities on the beach, and the services behind it, this beach is very popular among teenagers as well as families with small children.
Although there are several bathing establishments on the beach, there are also several parts that are free, so you never feel “closed in” or short of space.
There is a sheltered dune area – probably the only one in Elba – at the back of the beach, where the Pancratium Maritimum, with its beautiful, very perfumed white flowers, still grows. There are small pine groves with both maritime and stone pine trees at the back of the beach, and you can’t help but notice the one that is 250 years old, with its 30 metre wide canopy, next to the Ristorante Angiò restaurant just off the beach.
The name of the beach probably comes from the Latin word “lacuna”, dating back to the marshlands that Napoleon had cleaned up during his exile on the island.
There is also a fun park nearby.
Lacona is in the Commune of Capoliveri in the southern part of Elba. You can get there very easily even by public transport, and just cross the pine grove and you will get right to the beach.
